History

Built in the early 1920’s, the front nine was a favorite of the celebrities who came as summer stock for the historic Lakewood Theatre.  It is a classic links layout, with some of the most challenging holes in the state.  The challenge continues with the back nine, designed by famed New England Golf Course designer, Phil Wogan. Completed in 1995, the beautiful, well maintained 18 hole course combines distinctive holes, including Maine’s only par 6, with amazing scenery and views of Lake Wesserunsett in one direction and Sugarloaf and the Western Mountains in the other, to offer a great golfing experience for all skill levels.

The Browne brothers, Jim and Bob, bought the course in 1980 and ran it together, along with the course their father built, Natanis Golf Course in Vassalboro, for more than two decades.  Their love for the game of golf grew from a deep respect for the land and a shared reverence for working that land.  Growing up in a farming family they knew the satisfaction of waking with the sun and seeing the fruits of their labor blossom.  Today, Lakewood Golf Course is run by the third generation, Kevin and Margi Browne.  Taking pride in the family friendly atmosphere at Lakewood, they include their two children, Eleanor and James, in as much of the business as they can.  You might see them out changing cups with their dad or see evidence of their young entrepreneurial spirit in the golf ball and lemonade stand on the 2nd hole.  Lakewood has a long history and the Browne family is honored to carry on the traditions and help instill a love of this land in future generations.
